The Nindigully pub is Queensland’s oldest hotel located in it original condition and position on the banks of the Moonie River. The license was issued in 1864 after operating as shearer’s accommodation for the Nindigully Station.
We decided to visit the Nindigully Pub for lunch, their hamburgers are famous. The size of the burgers were massive and our friends, who had visited the pub before, shared between them.
The Gully, as it is affectionately known, brewed its own beer and spirits before XXXX and Bundaberg Rum even existed.
From St George we travel through cotton fields, most of which have been harvested and are being resewn for next years crop. We are amazed at the size of the growing paddocks and the holding catchments for the water needed to grow the crops. Being a very thirsty crop, not surprisingly these massive water holding catchments are the political football throughout Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, the water being diverted from the Darling catchment areas and starving the communities and agricultural holdings down stream of much needed water. This has been most evident during the past decade with Eastern Australia experiencing a severe drought.
The pub is the oldest continual license of a hotel in Queensland and the bar is decorated with all types of memorabilia and press clippings. It has a free camping area around the pub and offers free showers and toilet facilities to the travellers. Please be nice and show your appreciation by enjoying a meal and a drink at the pub. The friendly staff and pleasant surroundings made our journey worthwhile.
The beer garden has lovely lush green lawns and features a childrens play ground, BBQ area and a stage all farm styled and built with spit logs and corrugated iron.
After lunch, we walked along the concrete walkway that follows the river, with lush grassy banks and beautiful reflections in the still water.
The topic of discussion during our visit was the movie that was filmed at the pub, Paper Back Hero, which starred Claudia Carvan and Hugh Jackman.
After our massive hamburgers, we could not even think of anything to eat for dinner.
